Sheila Polk was browsing in a Goodwill store in Florida when she found a vintage looking letter inside a book she was going to buy.

Upon closer inspection, she found that the letter was addressed to a Helen Rothurmel and that it was sent from an Army Sargent Albert Alm.

The date was stamped on the envelope - May 28 1945

Fox news has reported that Helen Rothurmel was a member of the African American WACS unit stationed in Dallas, and Albert was stationed in Palm Springs, California.

Albert sent the love letter in 1945 but it was never received by Helen.

Ms Polk said: 'Her life could have been changed from this one letter. You know, it is a personal sentimental thing. They do movies about lost love, and I'm thinking who knows what is in here that she has never seen? Who knows? I would love for her to get it.'

However, as yet Ms Polk's search for Helen has been unsuccessful - though she is working with military officials to find Helen and her family.
