Meredith, a Leeds University student, was found semi naked with her throat cut in her shared house, in Perugia, Italy in 2007.

Sollecito made his comments last night, during an interview with CNN, following the outcome of the retrial, last Friday, where both he and Knox were found guilty, saying:

“I'm guilty just because in their minds I have to be guilty because I was her boyfriend. It doesn't make any sense to me.”

Sollecito’s sentence will not be imposed until next year, after the Italian Supreme Court confirms it, but explained he was trying to stay positive, despite facing 25 years in an Italian jail.

He said: “I'm trying to be as positive as possible in a situation like this. It's very traumatic, the situation here now. But on the other side, I still have to fight. I have chosen to be here and to fight against this ordeal.

“I don't know what to think, because objectively, there's nothing against me and nothing very strong against Amanda.”

Sollecito is now facing 25 years in an Italian jail if the decision by the court is upheld, while Knox – who has refused to return to Italy – was sentenced to 28 years.
