Last week twisted mum Rachel and her partner Nyomi Fee were convicted of the horrific murder of two-year-old Liam.

In his tragically short life, innocent Liam Fee, two, suffered unimaginable cruelty at the hands of the people he should have been able to trust most; his mum Rachel Fee and her civil partner Nyomi.

Horrifyingly, before his death in March 2014, little Liam had been tortured and battered. He had suffered "intense agony" after receiving more than 30 injuries, including two broken legs and two fractured arms.

Last week, Rachel, 31, and Nyomi, 29, were convicted of murder by inflicting sever blunt force trauma, and are currently awaiting sentencing.

Harrowing pictures showed the shocking extent of the abuse, revealing the barbaric shackles and makeshift cage used to imprison two other boys - who can't be named - they were also found guilty of abusing.

Shockingly, this isn't an isolated incident. In recent years there have been a string of cases where mothers have killed their children.

Ayeeshia Smith was just 21 months old when she was murdered in May 2014 by her mother Kathryn, while Daniel Pelka, four, was tortured and starved to death by mum Magdelena Luczak and stepdad Mariusz Krezolek.

The horrendous abuse in Liam's death also mirrors the notorious case of Baby P (Peter Connelly), who died in 2007 at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and his brother.

It's unthinkable that a mother could harm her own child, let alone end their life. So what compels these women to commit such horrendous crimes?

Experts believe controlling spousal relationships may be the main reason behind such violence.
