Heartbroken Madalina Neagu, 42, believed she was experiencing labour when she went to hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain, and was distraught to find that she had not been carrying a baby for the past nine-months.

After doctors from Botosani County Hospital, Romania carried out emergency tests, they were stunned to find a large tumour weighing 11lbs in her uterus.

One of the doctors who carried out the tests, Dr Dorin Scladan said, ‘When the woman told us she was pregnant, we initially expected pregnancy complications. The size of her belly was quite similar to that of a nine-month pregnant woman, so we didn’t have any reason to doubt that she was pregnant.’

Following the shocking discovery medics proceeded to carry out complex emergency surgery that lasted several hours to remove the tumour.

Dr Scladan added, ‘We don’t often see a tumour of this size and in this location. It was a record tumour for the region in the past 15 years.’

After the emergency surgery Ms Neagu was transferred to intensive care where she is now expected to make a full recovery.
