Plane with unresponsive pilot crashes into Atlantic after fighter jets scrambled

A plane travelling over the Atlantic ocean has crashed into the sea near Jamaica, after the pilot stopped responding to air traffic control.

Fighter jets were scrambled this afternoon to escort the aircraft after its pilot failed to respond to communications.

The fighter jet pilots saw the plane's pilot slumped over through the window of the cockpit, and it is believed he was unconscious.

The small plane, believed to be carrying two passengers, then rapidly descended, crashing into the ocean just north of the island of Jamaica.

It is believed the flight was from New York bound for Florida.

The fighter jets were scrambled at 3.30 UK time, but were forced to peel away from the aircraft when it drifted into restricted Cuban Airspace.

Both passengers and the pilot are unaccounted for at this stage.
