Why? You ask. The answer is two fold.
Not only do tampons and pads create an incredible amount of waste - an estimated 200,000 tonnes of landfill a year in the UK alone - there are also other issues at play here.
Tampons and pads are still considered a ‘luxury item’ by the UK government, meaning they are taxed at 5%, while girls in poorer parts of the world are forced to stay at home during their period, as they have no access to any sanitary items.
These three American woman, Miki Agrawal, Radha Agrawal and Antonia Dunbar have created these clever pants to reduce the need to buy sanitary products ever again.
Coming in three forms depending on your flow, the knickers have four ultra-thin micro-layers which work together to absorb blood, with the ‘hip huggers’ able to absorb up to 2 tampons worth of liquid.
They’ve also teamed up with a Ugandan charity - meaning that for every pair of pants sold, they donate enough money for seven sanitary pads - meaning girls in Uganda can still attend school while menstruating.
‘By reimagining feminine hygiene products to provide support, comfort, confidence, and peace of mind, we aim to eliminate shame, empowering women and girls around the world,’ reads the company's mission statement.
