A mother of a little boy with Down’s syndrome has been questioned by police after she posted a picture of the toddler locked in a washing machine.

Courtney Stewart, 21, shared the photo on Facebook and was quickly slammed for her actions.

She said about the picture: “He loves the washing machine. We took a picture and it was a laugh.”

One of Courtney’s neighbours contacted the Daily Record about the photo to express their shock and outrage.

They said: “It was terrible to look at. For anyone, let alone someone who is also a parent, to take a picture like that and stick it on Facebook for a laugh is unbelievable.

“It’s no wonder people are angry about it.

“People in the town have been talking about it, because anyone who has seen it has been left shocked.”

Ms Stewart insisted that the door was ‘not closed over’ and that the washing machine was unplugged.

Police confirmed that they had spoken to the young mum. A spokesperson said: “Advice was given. Relevant child care checks were made.”

Ms Stewart also claimed that she was physically assaulted after she shared the picture.

Police have since arrested a 42-year-old woman in relation to the alleged assault and she appeared in court on Monday.

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council told The Mirror: “We can’t comment on individuals but we are vigilant on any issue which could potentially affect the welfare of a child.”
