Mums-to-be warned ‘it’s safer to have your baby at home’

Pregnant women are being told that it is now safer for them to have a home birth than admit themselves to hospital.

Health experts are now advising mums-to-be that having children in midwife centres or at home reduces risks, because they are less likely to undergo unnecessary procedures such as caesarian or an episiotomy.

According to The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), doctors who are keen to get things moving will often opt for a C-section or use forceps, which can cause blood loss or infection.

Nice reported that the 45% of women who have uncomplicated pregnancies are better off having children outside of hospitals.

The companies clinical practice director Professor mark Baker said: ‘Most women are healthy and have straightforward pregnancies and births.’

‘For this group of women, giving birth in a midwife-led unit instead of a traditional labour ward is a safe option.’

‘Research also shows a home birth is generally safer than hospital for pregnant women at low risk of complications who have given birth before.’
