Young mum Sophie Ritson was jailed for 150 days today after admitting child neglect for abandoning her four-year-old daughter so she could go out. The 21-year-old, from Carlisle, Cumbria shockingly revealed in court that she needed to "be by herself" because her daughter's "attitude stinks."

On 25 July this year, neighbours raised the alarm after hearing the girl's pleas for food and water and police broke into the house before Ritson returned home from Carlisle city centre. Speaking at North Cumbria Magistrates' Court today, the prosecution told how the four-year-old's potty was nearly full when they found her in a dingy room with exposed floorboards.

When police questioned her, Ritson claimed she had given her daughter a drink and locked the bedroom door for her own safety. Defence lawyer Laura Harper said Ritson had been given little support as a new mum and "didn't feel as though she could go to anyone to talk to about child problems."

However the judge ruled the case so serious "custody was the only option." Ritson is allowed to be named after a court order banning publication of her identity was successfully challenged.
