Meet the inspirational street dog who lost a leg- but gained a family

When street dog Sasha was rushed to an animal rescue centre in India with life threatening injuries to her front legs after a car accident, staff feared the worst for the stricken pup.

Incredibly, despite losing a leg, Sasha has now made a full recovery- and has even gained her very own family. The one-year-old pet has since been adopted by Kanha- the man who rescued her from the roadside and rushed her to TOLFA animal hospital.

Jemma Sadler, TOLFA’s Assistant India Project Coordinator, says: “When Sasha was brought into our hospital we were all shocked by her condition. As well as being scared and in pain, she had already lost a lot of blood through the extensive wounds to both her front legs.

“We gave her emergency medical treatment, sedation to help with the pain and we knew the next 48 hours would be critical. We had hoped to save both of Sasha's legs, but when the blood supply stopped to her left leg we were left with no choice but to amputate."

But despite her condition and the amount of pain she was in, Sasha still bowled everyone over. Jemma says: “Everyone fell in love with Sasha and Sasha loved everyone! She was such a bright spark that when we did our morning rounds in the kennels, it was impossible not to smile at her. Even before the amputation and before she could get to the front of the kennel to greet us she still laid there wiggling her body and wagging her tail despite the pain she must have been in.”

Founded in 2005, TOLFA- a charity specializing in animal welfare, providing medical care, vaccinations, veterinary treatment and spay/neuter services- has helped more than 70,000 animals in ten years.

Sadly, Sasha isn’t alone. Jemma says: “Every day we receive a minimum of 4 emergency rescue calls to animals that have been hit by cars. Some come in with terrible wounds, others are temporarily paralysed and broken bones are very common."

Luckily for Sasha, after everything she'd been through, there was light at the end of the tunnel, and she was adopted. Jemma says: "We’re so grateful to Kanha for adopting Sasha. We already have 45 dogs, 25 cows and 11 donkeys we offer life long sanctuary, as well as the 250 animals that are here for medical treatments. Kanha adopting Sasha means that the place she would have taken among our sanctuary dogs can now be offered to the next dog who desperately needs shelter and doesn't have a lovely person like Kanha to care for her.

“The bond that Kanha and Sasha formed the day he picked her up injured in the street was very special. Not only was Sasha a street dog but after her amputation she became a street dog with only three legs but Kanha still connected with her, loved her and took her into his heart and family.”

Sasha is now recovering well

Now, Sasha has adapted well to her new life. Jemma adds: “Street dogs in particular are very resilient. They are survivors and it takes more than a lost leg to stop them! Dogs like Sasha are our inspiration every day to keep going, keep trying.”
