Shrek was found by Dr Brenda Gough, who immediately took the mis-treat hound to Park Road Veterinary Clinic in Ontario.
The shaggy dog could barely walk due to the crippling weight of his fur and sores on his legs. He was found on farmland in the rain laid next to a pond.
The clinic posted: "In order to clean him up, sedation and then anesthetic was necessary. Getting his matts shaved off were so painful for him, his skin so irritated and he was covered in mud and burrs."
He was named after the famous swamp ogre cartoon after his swamp-like state when he was found was likened to that of Shrek.
‘He was terrified, shaking horribly, and we couldn’t tell if he was ill or injured, only that he couldn’t run very far because the matts were not only so heavy, they had caked his legs together.’
Dr Gough has now adopted Shrek into her own family and says that he is doing well.
Shrek still has a few ailments including having low protein and anemia. But Dr Gough says that he is getting his appetite back and enjoying life in a loving home.
‘He is more comfortable with other dogs than with people, although he is learning that snuggling on the couch, warm and dry, loved by children and family, is actually pretty awesome. He is still terrified and nervous, but looking for human contact, and learning all about love.’
