A car has crashed into two different bus stops in the French city of Marseille, leaving at least one person dead.

The vehicle mounted the pavement in the 13th arrondissement of the city where it hit and injured a 29-year-old person at about 8.15am local time.

A few miles away about 45 minutes later, a 42-year-old woman who was standing alone at the bus stop was killed when the car came off the road again.

French prosecutors are currently not treating the incident as terror-related.

People are advised to avoid the Old Port area of the town as authorities investigate at the scene.

Police officers saw the Renault Espace car in the Vieux Port area where a 35-year-old man was arrested.

It has been reported the vehicle was stolen and the driver is said to have “psychological problems".

He was already known by police for "acts of minor delinquency".

While they are not being treated as terror-related by police, eyewitnesses have said the crashes did appear to be deliberate.

According to the guardian, Deputy Regional Secretary of the Alliance police union David Reverdy said: “The distance between the bus shelters and the distance of the route lead us to believe the driver was determined.

“However, it’s fair to ask ourselves why these two areas? There were few shops open at that time and if (the driver) wanted to cause deaths and injuries or carnage, there are other areas in Marseille and other times.

“This will be for the detectives to establish in interviewing the driver to understand his motives.”

The news comes after a 13-year-old girl was killed after a driver smashed into the terrace of a Pizza restaurant in Paris a week ago.

And last Thursday 13 people were killed and more than 100 were left injured in the Spanish city of Barcelona when a van plowed into locals and tourists on the busy La Rambla street.
