Biscuits are, let’s admit it, the backbone of British society.
You can pick up a packet of bog-standard digestives or bourbons for under a quid in most shops, and many of us do.
But, when we want to dip our toes in the pool of luxury sweet treats, we head to our local Marks & Spencer for something a little special.
Check it out:
These aren’t just biscuits; these are luxurious M&S Extremely Chocolatey Milk, Dark & White Biscuits.
Or are they?
Peter Marshall, 25, was happily dunking his posh biscuit in his tea when he noticed that all of the chocolate was melting away.
And, once all of that thick chocolatey goodness was gone, he was left absolutely gobsmascked.
Yup, the biscuit underneath looked just like a custard cream.
Peter, at the centre of the online outcry, told Metro.co.uk: "I was dunking biscuits into hot milk and as the chocolate came away I noticed that the base of one of the biscuits was actually a custard cream.
"I’ve always held M&S in quite high regard when it comes to food, and finding out that they were using a more common biscuit as a base was a bit of a shock."
M&S have since spoken out to clear their good name, insisting that there is no scandal.
"The biscuits used in the selection box are made with a luxury biscuit ingredient mix and are made using the custard cream mould before being covered in chocolate," a spokeswoman said.
"They may be in a custard cream mould, but they are not custard cream biscuits."
Well, quite - and the thick chocolate coating is more than enough luxury for us.
