The plasterer had popped round to see his neighbours for a friendly visit but was left with a 3 inch gash to his head.
Ian put on a spritz of Hugo Boss Bottled Night aftershave before heading over to his neighbour’s house.
‘It wasn’t as though it was overpowering,’ he explained. 'But as soon as I was inside the cat leapt up off table and landed on the back of my head.'
Ian continued: 'I managed to fling it off but it jumped up to have another go. This time I managed to knock it away with my shoulder.'
'It was only then that I touched the back of my head and saw my hand was covered in blood.'
Despite the savage attack, Ian says he doesn’t have any hard feelings towards his feline neighbour, who goes by the name of Blue.
'I don’t have any animosity towards the cat I just think it had a really bad reaction to the aftershave. I thought it was a nice smell - but obviously the cat didn’t agree.'
Blue is apparently rather fussy when it comes to smells. He reportedly loves the smell of tobacco but will run off he gets a whiff of Vaseline, but his loving owners say that he has never acted in such a violent manner before.
‘This was totally out of character, he normally runs off when he doesn’t like something,’ they explained. 'He’s the cuddliest, most lovely cat we have and he’s never attacked anyone before - its just Ian and his expensive aftershave.'
An animal psychologist explained Blue’s extreme reaction to the MailOnline.
Dr Roger Mugford said: 'Cats identify people by their smells and he may have seen the scent as a threat.
Dr Mugford even had a suggestion as to how Ian could make amends with the moggy.
'I would think that for this little cat the best thing for the man to do would be to go in with a treat as a peace offering.'
