Matthew Williams, 34, is said to have eaten one of his 22-year-old victim's eyes and half of her face.

Staff at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel, in Argoed, South Wales, called police after discovering the horrific scene.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and, although officers officially arrested Williams after tasering him, he 'became unresponsive and died'.

Williams had just been released from a five-and-a-half year prison sentence.

Local Jill Edwards told a UK newspaper: "This animal was eating this girl to death.

"He murdered her so police stopped him - good on them.

"Security said they told him no girls in his room and he didn't answer, when they opened his door he was eating her face."

Another nearby resident, Lyn Beasley, added: "He went Hannibal Lecter on the woman, he gouged her eyeball out, ate it and then ate half her face."

Police later confirmed they were called to deal with an attack at the hotel, adding that the man and woman had both died at the scene.
