Will Wood suffered a brain haemorrhage leaving him needing constant care. While recovering, Will – who was told he would need help with most tasks in his life – told his girlfriend Amy Perring to find another love. But Amy, 24, stood by Will, 32, and now, they’re getting married.
The couple, from Cheltenham, met three years ago in Dublin and started dating. But, just over a year later, in March 2013, Amy was told the devastating news that Will had been found unconscious after suffering a devastating brain haemorrhage.
“My dad works as a medical physicist and said that a bleed on the brain is serious and I started to cry,” Amy told the Mirror. “I couldn't take it in.”
Incredibly, Will recovered and five months later Amy supported Will as he learned to walk again. Just months on, Amy moved in with him to help care for him.
She said: "There was no doubt in my mind, I’d do anything for him, though I was adamant that I didn’t want to feel like his carer or make Will feel needy. So I cut up Will's food out of sight and made jokes with him as I shaved his face, like just doing one side.
“I helped him shower and dress but we chatted so I didn't feel like his nurse. Sometimes Will had memory loss too so I wrote out Post-It notes and put them round the house with reminders on.”
It’s not known whether Will could return to how his life used to be but Amy will never leave his side. “I chose to care for Will but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love seeing his progress,” she said.
And then, last month, Will got down on one knee. “I didn't know Will had already asked my parents for their permission to ask me to marry him,” Amy said. “Will and I are still so in love.”
