A 63-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested yesterday at a Great Manchester branch of Tesco after punching a five-day-old baby in the head.
Amy Duckers, 27, was horrified when the stranger approached her and her family in the store as she was chatting with friends. Amy said the man came straight over and punched her baby, named Elsie Rose, leaving 'a very big fist mark' on her forhead.
Amy quickly called the store's security team, who rushed onto the scene. The man has now been arrested on suspicion of assult. He was heard apologising for his actions, claiming that he thought the child 'was just a doll'.
Elsie, who weighs a tiny 6lbs 12oz, was taken straight to hosital and was immediately checked over but was not thought to be seriously injured.
Clearly horrified by the incident (who wouldn't be), Amy took to social media to praise Tesco staff for their help during the scary situation.
She wrote: "Thank you so much to Baguley Tesco for all you did tonight (Monday) you were all amazing thank you so much for the way you dealt with the situation and treated us all."
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said this in a statement:
"A man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a baby. Police were called shortly before 6.45pm to a supermarket on Altrincham Road in Baguley, 5 September 2016, to reports of a child having been hit.
"The baby girl was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been discharged.
"A 63-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in custody being questioned by officers."
We're sending our love to Amy's family.
