On Thursday evening 79-year-old Don Lock was murdered after getting out of his car following a crash with another vehicle.

The grandfather – who’d just been given the all clear from cancer – was repeatedly stabbed in a vicious attack near Findon, West Sussex, and died at the scene.

It’s believed he was attacked after his vehicle collided with another on the A24.

Now, a 34-year-man has been arrested on suspicion of his murder. He was caught by armed police officers in Worthing.

Floral tributes cover the scene, with heart-breaking notes from his family.

“I just wish I could hug you one last time,” his granddaughter wrote. “There are no words to express how I'm feeling. I have lost a very special grandad. My only grandad. I love you so much. You will be truly missed by so many people.”

A statement from Don’s family described him as a popular man with a passion for cycling.

It read: “He was not your typical great grandfather and was still cycling up to 150 miles per week. He was hugely loved by his family and friends and could often be called upon for his cycling or travel advice.”

The horrific murder shocked locals and dominated the headlines on Friday.

Since the arrest, police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward, with Det Supt Adam Hibbert saying: “A man is in custody on suspicion of murder.

“I continue to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision on the A24 at 20:40 BST last night or who may have CCTV or dashboard cameras of the area at that time, to come to assist our investigation.”
