After Scotland Yard announced last year that it would wind down the search for Madeleine, the Theresa May granted nearly £95,000 to extend the search for another six months back in April.
However, Theresa May has been a long time supporter of the McCann family, and could now be giving Kate and Gerry a new hope.
A source told The Mirror: “Kate and Gerry know the inquiry has to end one day but it is possible more time could be granted by Mrs May and her new Home Secretary Amber Rudd.
"Theresa has met the couple in the past and has been very supportive.
“It would be a boost to Kate and Gerry for the inquiry to continue but when it does end they will continue the search themselves.”
Mrs May, 59, recently revealed about her and her husband’s heartbreak at not being able to conceive. She said: “We were affected by not having children, but we coped.”

Maddie was three-years-old when she disappeared on holiday in Praia da Luz in May 2007, whilst parents Kate and Gerry were at a nearby restaurant with friends.
The 48-year-old parents both still believe that their daughter – who would now be 13 – could still be alive.
Kate and Gerry posted on their website Find Madeleine in May on the anniversary of Maddie’s disappearance to thank supporters for their help and commitment.
They wrote: “It has been a very long time but the investigation continues, information is still forthcoming and our hope and resolve continue.
“Until we have answers, until there is news (real news!), there will always be hope and we will continue to do everything we can to help find Madeleine.”

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said that they are “not prepared to discuss our ongoing investigation”, according to The Mirror.
