UK officers – who are part of the team searching shrubland near to where she went missing – are said to have asked Portuguese authorities if they could speak with three people.
However, local authorities in Praia da Luz have reportedly said there are likely to be more people they will want to speak with.
The BBC report this questioning could take place in the “very near future” and claim the interviews will be conducted by the Portuguese police, adding British officers will be present but will “not be allowed to intervene”.
Madeleine was just three-years-old when she vanished on 3 May 2007 from the family's holiday apartment while they dined with friends in a nearby tapas restaurant.
Her parents Kate, 46, and Gerry, 45, are being kept informed throughout the work and are said to be bracing themselves for “significant news”.
Forensics teams have been examining certain sections of the shrubland since Monday, using specialist radar equipment and sniffer dogs used in the search for April Jones.
There are currently two “fresh” areas officers have been focusing on, along with the continued search of the drainage system.
