All eyes are currently on the Algarve scrubland as British police continue to work within forensics tents, which have been erected over an 'area of interest' on the Madeleine McCann search site.

And now, according to teets from journalists stationed at the site, it seems as if activity has increased as police are seen carrying 'evidence bags' from the enclosure.

Michelle Clifford, who is currently reporting from the Madeleine McCann search site, tweeted: "Police forensic team have arrive at the first search area.

She later confirmed: "Officers in forensic gear leave tent and bag up protective clothing in Praia da Luz.

"Lead investigator in search for Madeleine McCann DCI Andy Redwood seen walking through search site at end of busy day.

"Long day for police. More activity in tent as officers go in wearing protective gear this evening."

It remains to be seen whether these evidence bags contain clues to the long-running missing child case, or whether they simply contain soil which has already been searched through.

This latest development in the Madeleine McCann case comes on the third day of the UK police operation in Praia da Luz to look for clues.

Madeleine, known by the nation as Maddy, was three when she disappeared as her parents, of Rothley, Leics, dined out in a nearby tapas bar with friends.

Forensic archaeologists and anthropologists also worked alongside the British teams from Operation Grange – set up in 2011 by the Met to re-investigate the case – on the patch of scrubland.

It is 300 yards from the holiday apartment where the McCanns were staying.
