Last night’s ultra catty episode of Made in Chelsea was made up of the ‘lads’ trying on suits and joking around whilst the lovely ladies of Chelsea ripped each other to shreds.
The girls continued cushioning their blows for the duration of the show with immaculately blowed out hair and push-up bras.
Though this is an everlasting theme in Made in Chelsea- cast members going from hero to zero in each other’s eyes within a couple of jaunts down the King’s Road- the bitching and catty comments between the warring castmates struck a nerve amongst fans.
Was all this really necessary? As the blokes shared banter during suit fittings the girls were staring daggers over cocktails.
The behaviour of the girls in Made in Chelsea and their automatic disdain for each other simply begs the question: When was it ever okay to wish failure on other people, and in particular other women?
Why do we continue to see other women as the enemy rather than simply a fellow human, worthy of respect and non-judgement?
It’s perfectly natural to compete with one another, but putting each other down on the basis of who you used to sleep is surely not healthy competition.
Hearing Lauren’s comment describing Binky as ‘famously not clever’ was snide and nasty, and the evil cackles that echoed between the two groups was painful for anyone to hear. Most women have felt such unnecessary nastiness directed at them- it’s horrific and hurtful and can make you feel small and insignificant.
Fair enough Binky was hurt by ex-boyfriend Alex, but she was never hurt by his new girlfriend and vice versa. Though it can be uncomfortable to see an ex-boyfriend move on with a new partner, does it really make sense to automatically consider them a ‘love rival’?
It all comes down to the game of ‘who will end up the happiest’ and ‘who will end up alone and miserable’.
Perhaps in a couple of weeks we can see Binky, Nicola and Lauren air kiss and make up, but in the mean time they (and women up and down the country) will continue to feel the senseless wrath based on jealousy and a mission to win the upper-hand over a man.
Ladies, play nicely. You never know when you might need each other’s back, so treat it nice and put those handbags away!
