American news site 9News.com has reported that teachers at Caprock Academy in Grand Junction told the 9-year-old student, Kamryn, that she couldn't come back to class without a wig or until her natural hair had grown back.

"I didn't realise that hair was such an important aspect of a child at school"

Why? Because her shaved head apparently violated the school's dress code.

Kamryn had shaved her head, with the approval of her parents, to support her 11-year-old friend Delaney, who is battling neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.

When her friend started losing her hair after she began a course of chemotherapy treatments, Kamryn wanted to offer her support.

"It felt like the right thing to do," Kamryn told 9News.com.

Delaney's mum, Wendy Campbell, told the station that she was surprised the school had refused to let Kamryn in because of the dress code - especially as she had shaved her head for such a supportive reason.

"For a little girl to be really brave and want to shave her head in support of her friend, I thought that was a huge statement and it builds character in a child."

Little Delaney also spoke to the station, explaining she was happy to have her friend's support but that she was sad Kamryn never got to show off her new look at school:

"It makes me sad because she was really happy to go back to school and show people what she did, but now that she didn't get to, she's kind of sad."

In a statement to 9News.com, Catherine Norton Breman, president and Chair of the academy's board of directors, said the dress code "was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school's students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted."

Do you think the school is being too strict with their dress code policy? Should they recognise that Kamryn's shaved head is not an act of rebellion, but one of support? And is it sending out the wrong message - that bald heads are undesirable - to children with cancer?
