On Tuesday night, his younger brother, Stefan Wilson, confirmed that Justin’s organs had been given to six people in desperate need of a transplant.

Taking to his Twitter page, Stefan shared the news with his legion of fans, writing: ‘With #giftoflife @justin_wilson saved 6 lives today. He just keeps setting the bar higher. Keep Julia & the girls in your prayers #myherojw.’

Indycar racer Justin, 37, was hit by a piece of debris flying from Sage Karam’s car, which hit him as he was racing behind him on Sunday.

The experienced driver was taking part in the Verizon IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway when he was struck, something which is more common in this type of racing - due to the cockpits being open.

After sustaining head injuries, Justin was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he remained in a coma until his death on Monday - with his wife Julia at his side.

He also leaves behind two daughters, who are aged seven and five.

His brother Stefan, also an Indycar driver, paid tribute to his brother on Twitter, writing: ‘Can’t even begin to describe the loss I feel right now. He was my Brother, my best friend, my role model and mentor. He was a champion!’

‘He never stopped giving and caring for others. Even at this time. He had pre-chosen to donate his organs to help others in need,’ his younger brother continued.
