Two boys, aged six and seven, were digging on a beach in Sydney, Australia, when they found the decomposed body of a baby girl.
Police were quickly called to the scene, where they launched an investigation into the infant’s death.

Describing the gruesome scene, an inspector with the local police said: "The children were digging, the child was buried under about 30 centimetres of sand.
"The two young children reported to their father who was nearby, who in turn contacted police."

Inspector Andrew Holland told reporters that authorities are now going through the records office to see if they can locate the parents of the child, and are hopeful they may come forward of their own free will.
Despite the advanced stage of decomposition of the child, a post-mortem is being carried out, to try to determine the likely cause of death.
