Brenda Leyland, who was believed to have posted abusive messages aimed at Gerry and Kate McCann, was found dead in a Leicestershire hotel over the weekend.

KATE AND GERRY MCCANN CALL POLICE AFTER BEING ATTACKED BY TWITTER TROLLS

Her body was found days after she was confronted outside her home by a Sky News reporter, who asked her why she had posted messages attacking the family on Twitter via the handle @sweepyface.

She replied: "I'm entitled to do that."

Brenda Leyland had accused the McCanns of neglecting their daughter Madeleine, who disappeared in 2007.

Sky issued a statement saying: "We were saddened to hear of the death of Brenda Leyland. It would be inappropriate to speculate or comment further at this time."

Katie Hopkins, however, has controversially blamed the McCanns, whose daughter went missing in Portugal in 2007, for Brenda's death.

She wrote furiously: "How many more must die before the McCann's accept their negligence is at the heart of all their grief?

"Enough already."

People were quick to defend the McCanns, with one Twitter user writing: "You don't think the couple feel any guilt ? Of course they do, it will be at the core of their grief."

But, while many slammed Katie for her comments, others surprisingly agreed with her.

One wrote furiously: "Well said Katie, this couple have been given way too much attention."

Another added: "They left 3 children in an unlocked room and went out socialising. How did they become saints? Totally negligent."

The McCanns

On Friday, Madeleine's father, Gerry McCann, told the BBC: "Clearly something needs to be done about the abuse on the internet.

"I think we probably need more people charged."

Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bed while on holiday in Portugal in 2007. She has, to this day, never been found.
