Rhyl in North Wales was left badly damaged following the recent flooding, and Kate and William reportedly wanted to help, as they are fond of the area, having lived close by for around four years.

The mayor of Rhyl is said to have received a letter from Kensington Palace, which said: “The Duke and Duchess realise that it is a long, slow and painful process for the many people displaced from their homes.

“As a token of their support, and to show the people of Rhyl that they are in their thoughts, Their Royal Highnesses would like to make a personal donation to your Rhyl Town Mayor’s Flood Appeal.”

Kate and Wills’ donation takes the appeal fund up to £50,000. Rhyl town mayor Andy Rutherford told a UK newspaper: “I was gob smacked when the letter arrived but it goes to show that when you keep the awareness of an issue, things can, and do, happen.

“I am delighted that the royal couple have taken the time to recognise that Rhyl was effected in the flooding and demonstrates their affiliation to places on the North West Coast.”

While William was stationed at RAF Valley, he and Kate lived on Anglesey, an island just 44 miles from Rhyl. They left last September, when William finished his role as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot.
