For the editor of the Irish Sun has confirmed that the publication will be dropping the raunchy pictures in a bid to reflect what its readership actually wants.
"Page 3 is a hugely popular pillar of The Sun in the UK and part of a package of great journalism which engages, entertains and informs in equal measure," explained editor Paul Clarkson.
"In the Irish Sun we strive to share the qualities that make the newspaper great in print and digital, but we also strive to cater for our own readers' needs and reflect the cultural differences in Ireland."
The topless shots will be replaced by slightly more covered up models, with former Miss World Rosanna Davidson and South African model Candice Swanepoel appearing in swimwear in the paper this week.
The debate about whether a family newspaper should carry pictures of bare breasts has been divisive, with supporters of Page 3 arguing that it is a British institution, and opponents claiming the images objectify women and are unacceptable in 2013.
More than 113,000 people have signed the No More Page 3 petition, which was set up by activist Lucy Holmes last summer and aims to lobby The Sun's editor to ditch the topless snaps.
Proprietor Rupert Murdoch has dropped hints that he is willing to change the format of Page 3, tweeting,"You may be right, don't know but considering" in response to someone who suggested the saucy pictures are "so last century”.
But he deleted the tweet and in its place wrote: "So Page 3 tweet is breaking news... Typical OTT reaction by the UK PC crew. Just considering, as we do every page daily Buy it and see....."
A number of celebrities have made their name from topless glamour modelling, including Katie Price, Samantha Fox and Kate Upton.
