MetaFilter user JannaK’s grandmother passed away in 1996 from brain cancer. In the weeks before she died, although she didn’t speak, she wrote index cards with mysterious sequences of letters on them.

For two decades, the family have been desperately trying to uncover what these letters could mean - all to no avail.

Until now, that is.

Yesterday JannaK posted the series of letters onto Ask MetaFilter, in the hope that someone there could help to decode his grandmother's final words.

He explained: "She was non-communicative her last two weeks, but in that time, she left at least 20 index cards with scribbled letters on them.

"My cousins and I were between 8-10 years old at the time, and believed she was leaving us a code. We puzzled over them for a few months trying substitution ciphers, and didn't get anywhere."

He pleaded for help, adding: "This is a crazy long shot, but I've seen Mefites pull off some pretty impressive code-breaking before!"

Within 14 minutes, user harperpitt had decoded the line on the back of the code:

JannaK responded: "Holy cow! 14 minutes to solve the back of the card that has been bugging my family for 20 years! That is amazing!"

Soon, more began to respond, suggesting that the rest of the letters could respond to prayers also.
