Originally from Iowa, the couple have been staying in Washington DC where Taylor has been receiving rehab treatment valuable toward his recovery.
When asked to recall memories from his injuries, Taylor said: ‘They asked me how much it hurts on a scale of one to ten. I said, ‘Definitely a ten. It freaking hurts.’ Taylor remained conscious after the explosion that tore off his limbs and managed to keep from falling into shock.
Once he arrived safely back in the US, Taylor was admitted to hospital and then a military rehab centre. With the help and love of long-term girlfriend Danielle, Taylor progressed faster than doctors expected.
The brave soldier still believes his and Danielle’s dream of owning a cabin by a lake where they can do water sports is still in reach. Danielle said: ‘After what happened, we will not abandon that dream if it takes years of saving.'
With the help of a Facebook page set up by his friends, over £250,000 has been raised to help Taylor and Danielle purchase their dream home that can house and support the brave soldier’s disability.
Taylor was recently awarded a Bronze Star with Valor at the rehab centre for his bravery, but said ‘If I had hands, I’d take this Bronze Star and pin it on Danielle… It’s been so hard and she’s been here the whole time.’
The devoted couple recently returned home for a wedding as well as a fundraiser for Taylor. Danielle said about their homecoming: ‘It was awesome to be back home surrounded by people we love. The night was perfect! It felt incredible to be in Taylor's arms again dancing the night away. It was amazing to see a glimpse of life after the hospital. Once again reassurance that we WILL have the life we have always dreamed of.’
