Homeware chain IKEA have warned parents to secure wardrobes and drawers to walls after two children were killed when furniture items tipped over.

The children, one aged two and the other aged 23 months, were fatally injured when the furniture fell on them.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission made the findings following the tragedies, causing IKEA to offer wall fixing kits to customers.

Those who own the MALM chest of drawers and dressers will be eligible to pick up the free anchoring kits.

The items will not be recalled but will continue being sold with the inclusion of the kits.

The mother of victim Curren Collas took to her Facebook page to express her relief over the decision to give away the free wall anchoring kits.

Jacqueline Collas lost her little boy when an IKEA item fell on him, pinning him to his bed.

She wrote on the social media site: "A huge breath of relief for me this morning […] knowing that this information is getting out there.

"Thank you so much, CPSC! So many precious little lives are being saved."

CPSC chairman Elliot Kaye said in a statement: "Today is a positive step, and I commend Ikea for taking that step. But they need to do more and to make more stable furniture and they need to help lead industry.”
