In a statement released on Thursday, police said that 31-year-old Derek Medina shot 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso several times at their Miami home.

That morning, Medina is said to have updated his status on Facebook, writing:

‘I'm going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news. My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope u understand me.’

He then added a picture of his wife’s body, with the caption ‘RIP Jennifer Alfonso’.

The couple had reportedly been rowing after she revealed her plans to leave him, and Medina claims she punched him and wielded a knife.

Police arrived to find Alfonso’s body, as well as her 10-year-old unharmed daughter.

Medina reportedly turned himself in after confessing to family, and the Facebook post was up for five hours before the site removed it.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the social network site wrote:

‘The content was reported to us. We took action on the profile removing the content and disabling the profile, and we reached out to law enforcement. We take action on all content that violates our terms, which are clearly laid out on our site.’

Reports suggest the couple had a turbulent relationship, with records showing that Media and Alfonso married in 2010, before divorcing in 2012 and remarrying three months later.
