Simon Smith, who was in the navy, has suffered domestic violence from his wife, Crystal, for years.
When enough finally became enough, Simon attempted to leave his wife and put a stop to her behaviour.
As he packed his bags to leave the family home, wife Crystal crept upstairs with an eight inch knife in her hand and stabbed him in the back.
At a navy function earlier that evening, Crystal had accused her husband of six years of having a affair.
Embarrassed in front of friends and colleagues, Simon was further taunted by his wife on the taxi journey home, as she told him she would ‘make it rain with pain.’
When they returned home, Crystal began throwing things at her husband, which caused him to leave the property - returning later to pick up some belongings.
But when he did return, Crystal was waiting, attacking him with a knife three times in the back.
During the attack Simon’s artery was severed, causing him to lose six pints of blood. He staggered downstairs and collapsed in the doorway, where neighbours assisted him.
Meanwhile, Crystal fled.
She was later found and has been sentenced to nine years for wounding with intent.
