A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of student Karen Buckley in Glasgow.

The arrest comes as police discover remains at a farm in north of the Scottish city in their extended search for the missing nurse.

Police Scotland confirmed the news this morning, releasing a statement reading: “Police Scotland officers have recovered human remains on a farm in the north Glasgow, on the outskirts of Milngavie.

“Formal identification has yet to take place, however, police believe that they may be those of missing woman Karen Buckley. Relatives are aware. Enquiries are continuing.”

The 24-year-old’s handbag was discovered in a park after she disappeared.

Karen was last seen at Sanctuary nightclub on Dunbarton Road in the West End of the city, an area popular with students. She reportedly left the nightclub at roughly 1am and was seen speaking to a man outside the entrance.

Irish-born Karen’s stricken parents flew to Glasgow to join police in the search for their daughter.

During a press conference they revealed that they were ‘desperate’ for Karen to be found.

Her father John Buckley told journalists and members of the public: “We are extremely concerned for her. We are desperate to get her back and safe with her family - she is our only daughter, we love her dearly and just want her to come home safe and sound.

“She always keeps in contact with her family and friends to let them know where she is and what she is up to.

“To not return to her flat or be in contact with her pals - not responding to texts and calls to her mobile is very, very worrying as it is so out of character.”

Karen’s mother Marion added: “We just want Karen home safely, we are desperate. She is our only daughter, we love her dearly.

“If anybody has any information please come forward, we would dearly appreciate it.”

Police are continuing their investigation in Glasgow and areas around the city.
