NASA has been put on alert after it was revealed that a huge asteroid is heading towards Earth.

The piece of galactic debris is set to ‘skim past Earth’ at more than 23,000 miles per hour.

Should scientists get the asteroid trajectory slightly wrong, it could hit the Earth with devastating effect.

An asteroid impact would cause massive tsunamis and earth quakes as well as causing a dust cloud which could create a climate shift.

Professor of astronomy at the University of Buckinghamshire Bill Napier told the Express that there is a “very real risk” of an asteroid hitting Earth.

He continued: “With something like YB35, we are looking at a scale of global destruction, something that would pose a risk to the continuation of the planet.

“These events are however very rare, it is the smaller yet still very damaging impacts which are a very real threat.”
