What would you do if you saw a homophobic couple being abused?

That’s the question that young filmmaker Julius Dein set out to answer, setting up a social experiment in order to see how the British public would react.

And it’s safe to say that the results of were extremely enlightening.

With help from actors Adam Ward and Josh Green, who played a gay couple, Julius staged several examples of homophobic bullying across London.

In the majority of cases, members of the public leapt to the aid of the couple, insisting that Julius was the one who was disgusting - and that, if he was really so uncomfortable with being around gay people, he should get off the train.

“People like you make this country look s**t,” fumed one.

However there were, worryingly, some who agreed with the vicious bullying attempt.

“They’ve got more rights than we do nowadays,” said one disgusted member of the public.

Love is love, but not all people see it like that.

Human rights are gay rights.

Speaking about making the video, actor Josh explained: “I jumped at the chance to make this video, because after everything that's happened in Orlando we need to share the words ‘Love is Love’.”

He continued: “At first I was nervous and didn't know what to expect but everyone was amazing!

“There was one woman who got a bit emotional when we told her it was a hidden camera. I put my arms round her and said don't get upset. She replied ‘it's just I'm so glad this is staged because my brother is gay and I worry about him so much and hope he never has to experience anything like this’.

“That really hit me and brought a tear to my eye, but I am so glad we did this and I thank Julius for allowing me to be part of something amazing.”

The video has provoked a huge reaction on Twitter, generating very mixed responses.

“This made me nearly cry... because of how supportive they were. Cry tears of joy!” raved one.

Another added: “Faith in humanity restored just a little bit more today.”

However some of the comments on YouTube proved that society still has a long way to go before homosexuality is respected.

One person wrote: “Being a homo[sexual] is wrong but we shouldn't hate them - we should hate what they’re doing.”

Another added: “Look, I think homosexuality is nasty and I don't agree with it but I would never treat someone like that and I would defend them if they were being bullied.

“It's just sad that people actually go out of their way to do what he did in the video."
