Hero bystanders pull car off trapped cyclist

A group of bystanders have been hailed as heroes after freeing a woman cyclist trapped under a car following a collision in London.

27 year-old Claire Pepper was freed by 10 men who lifted the car off of her and turned it on its side - giving paramedics waiting for the fire brigade immediate access.

‘They saved my life’

Claire, a fashion photographer, said from her hospital bed yesterday: ‘They saved my life.’

Expressing her gratitude to the motorists and taxi drivers moved the vehicle, she added: ‘I cannot thank them enough, I was super lucky, I could have died.’

'The people that lifted the car off me saved my life so I could get help quicker. They are my heroes’

Claire, was said to have been trapped by the head with her arms stretched out after her bicycle and the Volkswagen Golf collided, suffered concussion and a broken collarbone and said she couldn’t remember anything about the accident.

‘I still can't figure out how it happened.

‘I left work and had been cycling for about 10 minutes. I remember being on my bike on Kingsland Road and the next thing I remember was waking up in hospital at 2am.

‘Undoubtedly the people that lifted the car off me saved my life so I could get help quicker. They are my heroes.’

Claire thanked her Twitter followers for their well-wishes

Claire also stressed hat were it not for the helmet she was wearing, which she had bought just two days earlier, she could have died.

Among those who rushed to help her was taxi driver Shehryar Taj, 20, who said: ‘We held the car up for as long as we could. The woman was unconscious and we were doing everything possible. We were glad we could help the poor woman.’

Mr Taj added: ‘We hope the woman recovers and we wish her the best. It was all very upsetting.’

A security worker said: ‘The woman was stuck under the car and had her arms stretched out and looked in a bad way. A group of people were holding up the car. They were heroes.’
