Speaking in court, prosecutor Jane Sarginson said that the 33-year-old victim was in bed with her 6-year-old son.

Shortly after midnight, ex-boyfriend Aaron Barnett broke into their home in north Warwickshire, holding two kitchen knives.

Sarginson was quoted by The Mirror as saying: “The first thing she was aware of was the defendant, her ex-partner, appearing in her bedroom.

“She asked him how he got in, and she describes him as having a smirk on his face and saying ‘I broke in.’”

The frightened woman got out of bed and, on becoming aware of the knives in Barnett’s hands, pleaded with him: “Don’t do it, don’t do it; my little boy’s in the bed.”

But Barnett, who had broken in by smashing a window in the back door, went towards her and stabbed her in the chest as she kept begging ‘don’t do it’.

The savage attack saw her lung penetrated, large and small intestine severed, left kidney pierced and several major arteries damaged.

As she began to lose vision and hearing as a result of losing massive amounts of blood, she begged her little boy to call 999.

The traumatised child did so, telling the operator ‘mummy has been stabbed,’ and provided information about where they were and identifying the attacker as Barnett, who then fled.

Paramedics arrived and rushed her to hospital, where doctors were forced to remove 70% of the woman's intestines.

In addition to these injuries, the woman;s son has been left in a 'terrible' state; for a time he would not speak at all, and then could only express what happened through pictures as he received help from psychologists.

Jailing Barnett, who pleaded guilty to the crime, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones told him: “You showed no mercy. You attacked her with a knife and you caused the most serious wound to her chest. You delivered a number of blows, and five serious injuries were caused.

“Each one would have been sufficient to kill her; and it was your intention to kill her, to kill her with a knife in front of her six-year-old boy.

“The submission about remorse is substantially diminished when you leave her lying dying in a pool of blood by the side of her bed and your only thought was to escape.

“It is a miracle she didn’t die; and one of the reasons she did not die is because her little boy, and fancy having to do this at the age of six, dialled for help."
