Jessica Birks, who is 38 weeks pregnant, was forced to return the paint back to the store in Chesterfield as the bus driver was concerned the sealed tins would leak.

‘I asked him how I was to get home and he said “Not my problem”,’ Birks told a local newspaper.

‘He said I shouldn’t bother trying to get on another bus either, because he would ring the other drivers and tell them not to let me on. It was completely embarrassing.’

Stagecoach has since apologised to the young mother-to-be.

A spokeswoman said: ‘It would appear that on this occasion our driver was over-cautious in his approach and this customer should have been allowed to travel.

‘We have contacted the customer directly regarding the incident and are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused. We have reminded the driver of the guidelines on this issue.

‘We do allow paint to be carried in original and properly sealed containers of five litres or less.’
