Annegret Raunigk fell pregnant as the result of artificial insemination using both donated sperm and eggs.
She had decided to try and fall pregnant because her youngest daughter, who is nine, wanted a little brother or sister.
The teacher, who is now in the 21st week of her pregnancy, was left ‘shocked’ when an ultrasound told her she was carrying quadruplets.
However the mother-of-13 turned down the option of selective reduction - which is where one or more foetuses are aborted during a multi-pregnancy - and is instead focusing on welcoming her 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th children to the world.
Speaking with German newspaper Bild an Sonntag, Annegret - whose oldest daughter is reportedly 44 - said that she is ready to take on the challenge.
She said: "I'm not actually afraid. I simply assume I'll remain healthy and fit.
“In matters of organisation I have enough experience, that's not new for me.”
Defending her decision to have a baby in later life, she added: "How does one have to be at 65? One must apparently always fit some cliches which I find rather tiring.
"I think, one must decide that for oneself."
Annegret made headlines 10 years ago too, when she gave birth to her 13th child, Lelia, at the age of 55.
"At first, I only wanted one child," Bild quoted her as saying at the time.
"Not all were planned. But then things happen. I'm not a planner but rather spontaneous. And children keep me young."
