Speaking with American news site KHOU.com, 14-year-old Mikaela Medina explained that she went for a dip to cool down this weekend on Galveston Island.

“We know about sharks but you never think that something like this could happen to your own daughter, so I was kind of in denial at the beginning"

But, after wading into the water and kneeling down, she suddenly felt something strange.

"It just felt like something bumped into my back.

“I was like, this could be a shark.”

Mikaela didn't feel any pain at first - and didn't even see the shark. But, after coming to shore so her mother could take a look, it soon became apparent what had taken place in the murky water.

Her mother revealed: “We know about sharks but you never think that something like this could happen to your own daughter, so I was kind of in denial at the beginning."

The two ran to the family’s nearby beach house, and a physician friend, who was spending the day with them, was able to treat Medina on the spot with no stitches or further medical attention.

“It’s really crazy,” said Mikaela.

“I didn’t think that could ever happen and it could’ve been a lot worse.”
