Animal lovers might want to look away, as this little known procedure is pretty grim - even for the stronger stomached amongst us.

The commercial egg industry commonly gets rid of millions of male chicks, because they will not grow up into egg-laying chickens.

But rather than killing them humanely, the chicks are ground up alive or suffocated in a horrific ‘shredding’ procedure right after they hatch.

This practice is commonplace in both caged and free range egg producers across the world, but Germany have said it’s time to stop.

After pressure from animal rights activists, the German government have teamed up with scientists to create an alternative.

Now, new technology will be sued to determine the sex of each fertilised egg before the chick actually develops.

So all of the male identified eggs will be removed, leaving only the females to hatch into chicks.

The male eggs will then be used for other produce.
