Paul Mason earned the title of the world’s fattest man after weighing in at a staggering 70st. The former postman struggled with his weight as a child but as an adult, overeating eventually left him bedridden.

But, in an inspiring transformation, Paul lost an incredible 48st after having a gastric band and then flew to New York to have almost 4st of excess skin removed from his body.

Just prior to this, Paul met Rebecca Mountain and the pair quickly got engaged and moved into together.

But sadly, in an announcement made on Facebook this afternoon, Rebecca, who was writing on Paul’s behalf, said: “Paul and I have been struggling for many months with our relationship and last month we came to a mutual decision to call off our engagement.

“The focus right now is for Paul to get the help he needs and to focus on one day at a time in his recovery not only from the surgery earlier this year, but recovery from years of emotional trauma that was the reason for his weight gain.”

Despite the split, Rebecca said the two remain close. She continued: “Paul and I remain friends and I remain committed to helping him on his journey - the reason I contacted him in the first place exactly two years ago.

“Paul has come very far over the last year and made incredible progress, walking without a cane often times, reaching an incredible 289lbs, and reaching out to the world about his story and trying to help others with his experience.”

She poignantly ended the post with: “The journey continues...”
