Paul, 53, who comes from Ipswich, spent Christmas and New Year with Rebecca, who's from Massachusetts, after meeting her online.
It’s unlikely Paul – who weighed 70 stone at his heaviest – was expecting this however, as Rebecca popped the question on ABC show, The View, live on air as a stunned audience clapped and cheered.
Speaking on the show, Paul explained he was determined to keep losing weight, saying: “I don’t want to go down that aisle in a wheelchair.”
Paul – who flew out to the US in December – was meeting with surgeons to speak about removing his excess skin and explained on the show, that a New York based plastic surgeon is willing to perform the treatment.
“What she’s going to do is my tummy and my arms, both at the same time,” he explained.
“I thought just the tummy would be major surgery on its own, but she feels confident that because my health is good, she could do the arms at the same time. It’s excellent.”
And, amazingly, The View, are going to help pay for the surgery – thought to be costing £10,000 – as Paul is still waiting for help from the NHS.
It’s thought he will return home later in the month before heading back out for the treatment later this year.
