The child’s family had just landed in Alicante-Elche Airport and were waiting in the baggage collection area when the tragic incident occurred.

According to police sources, the boy’s mother had placed him on the special conveyor belt reserved for larger suitcases, pushchairs and musical instrument whilst it was turned off.

To her horror, the belt was then switched on and the infant carried along the belt before becoming trapped at the entrance of the bag drop portal.

Although paramedics rushed to save his life, the child died at the scene.

Reports suggest that the family are either British or American, although the family were travelling to Spain from London Gatwick.

His parents, who reportedly have another older child, are said to be staying at the resort they had originally booked.

Red Cross volunteers are on hand for psychological help.

A Guardia Civil spokesman said it was investigating the incident, but said it was currently being put down as ‘an accident’.
