Five Britons have been killed in an attack on a beach in Sousse, a popular tourist resort in Tunisia.

At least 37 people have died.

Foreign secretary Phillip Hammond confirmed the British fatalities this evening and said a “high proportion” of casualties are expected to be from the UK.

As the news continues to filter through, terrifying stories of those caught up in the attack are coming to light.

Saera Wilson was on the beach with her fiancé Matthew James.Saera, from Trehafod, near Pontypridd, said that Matthew acted like a human shield to protect her.

He was shot three times and is now in hospital.

“He took a bullet for me,” Saera told the Daily Record. “I owe him my life because he threw himself in front of me when the shooting started. He was covered in blood from the shots, but he just told me to run away.

“He told me: 'I love you babe. But just go - tell our children that their daddy loves them.”

Saera also described the terrifying scenes that ensued after one gunman – who is believed to have disguised himself as a tourist, hiding an automatic weapon in an umbrella – opened fire.

“You just can't explain how terrible it was. It was chaos with screaming and gunshots. I'm just so glad Matthew is alive because so many other people are dead.”

Earlier, a statement released by the Foreign Office said the gunmen had attacked the Imperial Hotel and Hotel Club Riu Bellevue at Port El Kantaoui.

They urged those nearby to stay inside for fear some of the attackers may still be at large.
