Athena Orchard died on Wednesday from bone cancer, after fighting the disease for months.

But when her parents where in her bedroom, they discovered a secret message written in marker pen on the back of her mirror.

'Maybe it's not about the happy ending, maybe it's about the story…The purpose of life is a life of purpose.'

Athena discovered she had cancer when she found a small lump on her head in December 2013 and underwent several bouts of treatment to fend off the disease.

In the inspirational message, Athena wrote: 'Every day is special, so make the most of it.'

'You could get a life-ending illness tomorrow so make the most of every day…Life is only bad if you make it bad.'

Diagnosed with Bone Cancer Osteosarcoma, Athena underwent intense chemotherapy on her spine, left shoulder and head. She also endured a seven and a half hour operation to remove the tumour on her spine. But despite the sad set of circumstances, Athena's note was upbeat in outlook.

'Happiness depends upon ourselves…Maybe it's not about the happy ending, maybe it's about the story…The purpose of life is a life of purpose.'

Her father referred to his daughter as a 'very spiritual person,' and said her note reflected this.

Tragically, Athena also wrote about her hopes and dreams for the future, including her want to 'fall in love with someone I can open my heart to.'

Athena's parents added that they will keep her mirror forever as a memento to their inspirational daughter.
