Five-month-old Aavielle Wakefield was shot while travelling in the car with her mother and her friend in Cleveland, America.

Aaviellle was shot in the chest through the car and, although doctors tried desperately to save her, she tragically died later today in hospital.

Aavielle is the third child under six years of age to be shot and killed this month alone in the country.

A charity page now set up in her name has been flooded with donations and well-wishers, with a woman close to the family writing on the page: “Another one of our children has become our angel. My best friend lost her five-month-old daughter to senseless violence. Her and her family are now forced to start a new life without one of her angels.”

The news of her tragic death comes less than 24 hours after a mass shooting at the Umpqua Community College School in Oregon - where 9 lost their lives.

The shooting made international headlines as it was revealed this sickening attack was the 142nd incident at a school since the Sandy Hook attacks in 2012. That makes one a week.

Named as Chris Mercer Harper, the 26 year old killed nine people and wounded seven others in his attack – where it’s reported he only attacked Christians.

Stacy Boyland, whose daughter survived, told CNN the gunman asked for people’s religions before shooting. He told them he asked: “Are you a Christian?” and then said: “If you are a Christian stand up.”

He then recalled Mercer Harper’s chilling words to his victims: “Because you're a Christian you're going to see God in just about one second”.

The debate around US gun laws has heated up off the back of this news, as critics of the current laws claim the shootings could be prevented by making the process of obtaining a gun more difficult.

However, some members of the pro-gun lobby argue that if more people were armed, and less ‘no gun zones’ were in place, there would be less gun-related violence.

Cause, you know, that makes perfect logical sense…
