It's time for a reality check; the hundreds of Facebook friends you've racked up over the last few years? A lot of them probably don't even remember who you are. And we imagine you probably feel the same.

But, while most of us politely ignore their Facebook posts and post a generic "happy birthday" when the relevant notification pops up, a new app has promised to end all of that awkwardness.

Say hello to Hate with Friends.

Looks friendly, doesn't it?
Looks friendly, doesn't it?

If you log into www.hatewithfriends.com with your Facebook account, it will bring in a list of all your friends. And, from there you, can select the friends you hate.

Secretly.

If that person has used the service and has "hated you," you will get an alert that you both hate each other. Ending the faux Facebook friendship forever, presumably.

Of course, the site isn't meant to be taken very seriously.

"It's meant to be some fun and social commentary on the current status of Facebook," creator Chris Baker explained to ABC News. He expects that it will be a rare occurrence when mutual hatred is found on the site.

"I think this anti-social stuff is the next big trend," he added. "Will the next social network be a picture of a padded cell?"

Hate's such a strong word, isn't it?

While we're all on board with cutting down our Facebook friends list, we think "hate" is probably too strong a word. We'd prefer to notify people with a more wordy, yet more polite, message, along the following lines:

"Over the past few months, I have found myself goring increasingly dissatisfied with our Facebook friendship. I think now is the time to stop pretending we know each other and call it a day. I wish you well in all of your future endeavours and hope you can find a way to enjoy your social networking without me in your friends list."

Something to that effect, anyway.
