Deliver driver Susan Guy explained to Action News 5 (an American news site) that elderly Jean Wilson had ordered one large pepperoni pizza every single day for the past three years:
"We make her pizza every day before she even calls, because we know she's going to call"
"We make her pizza every day before she even calls, because we know she's going to call."
So, when workers noticed an unusual break in the pizza-loving woman's pattern, Susan was immediately concerned.
"She hadn't called in three days."
The kind pizza delivery driver insisted to her boss that she be allowed to check in on Jean to make sure she was okay.
"He was like, 'Naw, you don't have to do that,' and I said, 'Yeah I do. Clock me out if that's what you gotta do.'"
Susan then drove to Jean's house and knocked on her door, but no one answered. Unprepared to give up, she then banged on Jean's windows, but there was still no response.
While most people might have given up and gone home at that point, Susan refused to give up, running to a neighbour's house for help.
She asked if he had seen Jean that day: "And he said, 'No, maybe she's not home.'"
"And I said, 'Well, not home?' I said, 'How many times have you see her leave?' And he goes, 'Never.'"
Susan quickly called 911 and, when police arrived, they broke down the door to Jean's home.
It was lucky they did; they found Jean lying on the floor and learned that she'd been laying there since, as she was unable to get over to a telephone to call for help.
It could just be that Jean's pizza-only diet saved her life.
So why did Susan work so hard to make sure Jean was safe and sound?
"She treats us really well. She appreciates us, and that's something we don't get in customers a lot."
Thanks to Susan's perseverance and quick-thinking, Jean is now in a non-critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.
